Scholarship Fund Cash Raffle winners announced

Winners of the 50/50 Scholarship Fund Cash Raffle were  announced Dec. 3 during SERV Behavioral Health System’s holiday  party in the Administration office in Ewing.
The Cash Raffle raised $5,460, half of which ($2,730) will support  the SERV Foundation’s Scholarship Fund.   First-prize winner, Lisa  Mongue of Mystic, Ct., won 25%, totaling $1,365.   Second-prize of  $819 (15%) went to Shauwea L. Hamilton of Ewing and third prize  of $546 (10%) went to Rick Stein of East Windsor.
In addition, two SERV employees were each winners of $100 gift  cards for selling the most raffle tickets.   They were Marilyn Ticktin,  Director of Housing Development, who sold 80 tickets; and Dr. Jay  Cohen, psychiatrist, who sold 35 tickets.
Since the Scholarship Fund’s inception in 2004, The SERV  Foundation has awarded 117 scholarships totaling $130,338.39  (through Spring 2010).  Among the 86 individuals who received the  scholarships (some are multiple recipients) over a six-year period, a  phenomenal 94% completed their intended classes.  Degrees or  certificates earned among those who have graduated include the  fields of ultrasound technology, medical technology, culinary arts,  business, auto technology, pharmaceuticals, barbering and  cosmetology. One student earned a master’s degree in substance  abuse counseling. Another graduate published a book of 100 poems  detailing his struggles with mental health and of his feelings on  social issues.  Others are continuing to earn three credits each  semester to eventually meet their goal of receiving a diploma.
Furthering their education is a means by which our residents can  enhance their personal and/or career development, attain gainful  employment, and in turn, become productive, self-sustaining  members of the community.
Thank you to all who supported our Scholarship Fund raffle and  congratulations to the winners.
